How many hens can the Sussex hold?
The raised roosting and nesting area of the Sussex Coop will hold 4 to 5 medium sized birds quite comfortably. What is probably more important to consider is the amount of space they will have during the day.
If you intend to give them time to roam around your garden then the run space is less of a determining factor and 4 to 5 hens would be fine. However if they are to spend their entire day inside the Sussex then to be fair to your hens we would recommend just 2 and ideally, we'd hope you would consider upgrading to the Sussex with Run which would be ideal for 2 - 3 medium sized hens or the Sussex with Double Run which would be perfect for up to 4 hens.
The benefit of all our coops is that the run can be extended at any time should the need arise and in theory you can add as many run extensions as you need.
Wood & General Maintenance
The wood we use in this product is a highly durable and scented softwood which is noted for its resistance to decay and rot. Our wooden coops are treated with a base coat of wood preservative but as with all outdoor wooden structures, we recommend that you treat your coop with a high-quality varnish or wood preservative once a year (preferably before the winter season) to maintain the applied preservative and water repellent properties. We also highly recommend that you try and position your chicken coop in a protected area which is not overly exposed to high winds and the elements.
A lot of thought has gone into the latest version of our popular Sussex Chicken House. We've increased the size by 15% and it now has an amazing 19.64 square feet of secure space in one practical and self-contained coop.
The long slanted felt-free roof provides the perfect cover even in driving rain, keeping your hens and their food dry - one of the reasons why so many people choose the Sussex coop and why it remains a best seller.
We have also designed an extendable run that can conveniently fit on either side of the Sussex so you always have that option of easily increasing the size of the secure run space - without any hassle or special D.I.Y skills.
The raised sleeping and laying area now has over 7.24 square feet of space which is big enough to hold up to 4 or 5 hens. The high position of the large nesting box and the lift up lid allows you to easily collect your eggs, without disturbing your hens.
The nesting box can also be unbolted - a feature which allows you to conveniently access the internal housing area of the chicken house, making it quick and even easier for you to clean. We've increased the depth of the pull-out tray so any bedding you place in it won't easily spill out when it is removed.
Two thin slits above the nesting box provide the housing area with all important draft free ventilation and the 4 mini Perspex windows allow lots of light into the internal area of the coop.
There are also 2 correctly designed and fully removable perches which are purposely positioned high to encourage your hens to roost at night and not to sleep in the nesting boxes.
The Sussex coop has a clever door opening mechanism which allows the door to the run to be conveniently opened from the outside.
A handy little ramp allows your hens' easy access in and out of the housing area which has been raised enough to give your birds more space to scratch around underneath.
All of our coops and runs use very strong and rigid chicken wire that is on average 50% thicker than the standard stuff found on most of our competitors products. Meaning that overall the Sussex is stronger and your hens should be much better protected.
The Sussex chicken house has been created by expert designers and manufactured by experienced carpenters. The workmanship that has gone into producing this coop for you is evident in the way it has been beautifully finished and the attention to detail.
The superb quality and beautiful design of the Sussex means that it will look fantastic in any garden, and is guaranteed to give you and your chickens many years of pleasure.
